What is Automatic Writing?
I’ve been automatic writing for a decade and throughout that time I’ve been asked to explain what it is. I continue to struggle to find an answer that explains the depth, source, and essence of automatic writing. To me, even the term “automatic writing” (or “inspirational writing” or “independent writing”) has never felt quite right. It conjures up the image of a pen springing to life, independent of the writer’s hand. That’s not how it works for me—yet, while I’m well aware that I’m writing (or typing as is the case for me), I also know the words coming through are not of my conscious creation.
While I felt the urge to give a succinct definition and history of automatic writing, I decided it makes better sense to “ask” through automatic writing what it is. Here is what I received:
“Dear one, automatic writing is a way in which man can communicate with that which surrounds him. It is merely a technique that brings into written form the divine. In other words, man cannot ‘see’ the source of all, but man can, in this way, communicate. Through this technique, one can receive great clarification, great information, great wisdom that can help one transform into who they really are. In other words, there is great wisdom, great clarity, great strength, and it is ever present. By tapping in, man can access this information and allow life to unfold in a manner that is gracious.
“Automatic writing is not to be feared, but it is to be respected and gratified. It should never be used to intimidate another. It should never be used to manipulate another. It is through this message that the divine wisdom of the universe is absorbed and communicated. Many other such techniques exist. Meditation. A gentle breeze. A smooth sunrise. All elicit the greater knowing that man is not alone, adrift, but instead anchored in deep and truthful joy and love. That is the message indeed.”
To me, that says it all. That IS what I know about automatic writing. I’ve come to a place where I don’t have to “know” how it works. Similarly, I am a photographer who knows how to use a camera, yet I don’t know the technical aspects behind how the process works. I just trust that when I push a button, I will “get” what I see. The same is true for automatic writing. I cannot explain the “how” behind it. I just trust.
